A new company in the Louisiana Technology Park, obdEdge LLC, announced today that it has developed a patent-pending product that curbs the use of mobile phones by drivers.

Dubbed cellcontrol, the application can be downloaded to cell phones and will detect when a phone user is driving a vehicle. The application then diverts incoming calls to voice mail (except for emergency numbers, such as 911) and it prevents the sending of e-mail and text messages while the vehicle is in motion.

Company officials said there’s no loss of information to the phone user; the product simply delays access to all incoming text messages and e-mails until the vehicle is stopped.

The company’s BlackBerry beta test is nearly complete, and tests versions for other phones are soon to be released, obdEdge officials said.

Users will be able to “white-list” some calls, such as calls from children at home to a parent. More than 500,000 injuries result each year from accidents caused by the use of a mobile device, said Sean Brown, obdEdge’s director of business development.

“We know cellcontrol has the ability to dramatically reduce these numbers, hopefully lowering insurance premiums, worker’s compensation claims, vehicle accidents, and ultimately saving lives,” he said in a statement. The national release of the product is expected in late September.
